Chitas and Rambam

Why is Chitas important?

Each era is born with its own spiritual key, a particular observance or practice that serves more than all others as the gateway through which a generation travels. The Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe thus enacted the study of Chitas, a study regimen suitable for everyone.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe insisted that in the modern era, our security and success is ensured by the daily study of Chitas. Indeed, the Rebbe called upon Jews everywhere to take up the study from which they would benefit tremendously in spirit and in the concrete needs of their material lives.

For more on the importance of Chitas, visit here and here.

How does Chayenu help me learn Chitas?

Chayenu is a portable study magazine that is delivered to your door. It contains all of your study material in an easy to read format, with english translation, and explanation. This eliminates all work that would normally go into locating your books and finding your place, and lets you easily digest your daily dose of Torah.

What is Chitas?

Chitas (חת”ת) refers to the daily study of three essential Jewish texts:

Chumash: The Five Books of Torah, divided into weekly portions (the parsha) read in synagogues on Shabbat throughout the year. Studying an aliyah (portion) each day allows one to review the entire Chumash annually.

Tehillim: The Book of Psalms, expressing King David’s love, awe, and faith in G-d, and more. It is divided into 30 portions, allowing recitation of the entire book each month.

Tanya: A seminal work by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad. It addresses the nature of G‑d, the soul, and practical guidance for joyful service to G‑d in daily life.

This study was instituted by the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Ytzchak Schnnersohn, and continuously and vigorously encouraged by the Rebbe—perhaps more than any other study schedule—referring to it as a study “suitable for every person.”

What if I want to learn Torah more in depth?

Chayenu’s content caters to all levels of learners. Whether you’re seeking a concise overview or a deeper exploration, you’ll find a Chayenu section tailored to your needs.

As the Torah is limitless and we can only fit so much into the Chayenu booklet, we understand that you’d like to learn more than what we can provide. We strongly encourage you to add more Torah learning than what Chayenu offers.

What if I don't have time to learn Torah?

Learning Torah is crucial for a Jewish person. Besides it being a commandment, it uplifts a person’s day and inspires growth. It might not always be easy, but you can always find a few minutes to study.

See here how some of the busiest people-CEO’s, moms, community leaders-make time for their studies.

Should I learn 3 chapters of Rambam a day, 1 chapter, or Sefer Hamitzvos?

Learning three chapters of Rambam a day (featured in the Chayenu3) is the optimal study track in which one learns the entire Mishnah Torah in just under a year.

If you are not yet able to take on learning three chapters of Rambam a day for whatever reason, you are encouraged to learn one chapter a day (featured in the Chayenu flagship edition). Here also the entire Mishneh Torah is studied and is completed in just under 3 years.

If you find that one chapter a day is difficult, the Rebbe enacted the study of Rambam’s Sefer Hamitzvos (Book of Commandments) where you will learn all of the 613 commandments over the course of the year (featured in the Chayenu flagship edition).

Do I have to learn Chitas? Why can't I learn what I want?

See “why is Chitas important” above.

While you could most definitely learn whatever you want, Chayenu offers a structured approach to daily Torah study. Chayenu focuses specifically on the fundamentals of Chitas (Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya) and Rambam, study cycles instituted by the Lubavitcher Rebbes as practical for people of all ages, intelligence, and walks of life. This format ensures consistency and depth and is a perfect baseline for study.

What is Rambam?

“Rambam” is a Hebrew acronym for “Rabbeinu Moshe Ben Maimon,” (literally translated as “Our Teacher, Moses son of Maimon”). Rabbeinu Moshe ben Maimon (1135 - 1204) was a famous scholar, physician, philosopher, and one of the greatest sages of the medieval ages.

The term ‘Rambam’ has become synonymous with Rambam’s (Maimonides’) primary work, the Mishneh Torah (also known as the Yad Hachazakah), which is a fourteen-volume, comprehensive code of Jewish law.

In 1984, the Lubavitcher Rebbe enacted the daily study of Rambam to herald the arrival of Moshiach.

The Rebbe explained that he wanted to bring all Jews - men, women and children, from across the entire spectrum of Judaism - together in the study of Torah, where everyone is studying the same subject---a compilation of all the Torah's laws.

Shaimos - Disposing of old Chayenus

Is Chayenu Shaimos?

Yes. Your Chayenu is full of Torah literature – that is why you subscribe to it – and therefore deserves to be cared for with respect and holiness.

How do I treat Shaimos?

The conventional method of discarding Shaimos is burying it in the ground. Since not everyone has a way or doesn’t know exactly how to bury their Shaimos, they set it aside in a designated area (in their home), until they have a respectful manner to dispose of it. (E.g., Shaimos trucks that come to certain neighborhoods to collect Shaimos, or stores who have a collection service, etc.).

For more on disposing Shaimos, visit Shaimos | Chayenu - Daily Torah Study

What is Shaimos?

The word (“Shaimos” lit., names) refers to the names of G-d that are forbidden to be erased. Today, Shaimos became a generic term for all articles that contain some form of holiness and must be disposed of in a respectful way.

For more on Shaimos, visit Shaimos | Chayenu - Daily Torah Study.

How can I dispose my Chayenus?

We understand that this can be an added responsibility, but here are some suggestions:

  • Place a box in a closet or a minimally used area in your house, and place all used Chayenus in the box, until you have an opportunity to dispose of it in a respectful manner.

  • CH Shipping Center offers a service where they will send you a returnable box and take care of the disposal for you. Visit here and order a box. One box fits an average of 75 Chayenus.

What are Chayenu’s goals?

To inspire people to live their lives aligned with the teachings of Torah and Chasidus. What does Chayenu plan for in the future?

Collaborating with other organizations, such as Kehot Publication Society, Artscroll - Mesorah, Chabad.org, and more, to enhance Torah study resources. Chayenu continues to innovate and expand its offerings.

What is Chayenu?

Chayenu started out with promoting the daily study of Chitas (Chumash, Tehillim and Tanya), Rambam and daily learning in general, especially for those who would benefit from an accompanying English translation.

Chayenu produces a Torah based weekly publication, which contains a range of basic to more advanced subjects of Torah in Hebrew with English translation and publishes Torah books, all with the intent of inspiring growth in one’s Torah study and connection to G-d.

The Benefits of Chayenu

How is Chayenu meeting their goals?
